Electric Blanket Safety Tips

Before you decide to purchase an electric warming blanket it is important to understand electric blanket safety. While these blankets are designed to be safe there are some things you should know prior to shopping for them. You can buy electric blankets at high-end and discount department stores everywhere, as well as from online shops and boutiques. Popular brands include Sunbeam, Polartec and Dreamland to name just three. With so much selection available it helps to narrow down the field a bit. Read on to learn more about the different electric blankets out there and how to use them safely.

The standard electric blanket operates on 120 volts of electricity. Some use as much as 180 volts of electricity. If such an appliance were to malfunction or be used improperly there could possibly be a chance of electric shock to the user. To avoid the risk of electric shock while conserving energy, consider a low voltage warming blanket. There are lots of them available from top brands that operate on 25 volts of electricity or less. This is safer for the user and healthier for the planet because less energy is being used. Low voltage blankets are just as effective as their higher voltage counterparts, perhaps even more so.

Another safety hazard when using electric blankets is burns resulting from high temperatures. The good news is that the majority of modern electric blankets are designed not to overheat and have automatic shutoff features. As a general rule if a warming blanket does not have an automatic shutoff feature you shouldn't buy it. Also when using an electric blanket check the wiring to make sure it is not damaged in any way. Do not use an electric blanket if the controls are not working properly. Most blankets of this type have dial style controls with as many as ten heat settings.

One issue that can affect electric blanket safety is the outlet used to plug in the blanket. It should be intact with outlet cover and functioning properly. Make sure the blanket plug fits snugly into the outlet. Keep curtains and other objects several feet away from the outlet to reduce the risk of fire. You may even want to look for a blanket with cordless controls to avoid this issue altogether. Finally make sure any electric warming blanket you purchase is UL certified which means it has been stringently tested for safety and quality.
