Why You Need a Heated Blanket

There is little else more comforting in cold weather than a heated blanket. If you are someone who loves staying warm and always needs extra blankets why not go for an electric blanket? Not only can this keep you warmer it can also save energy. At night when you go to bed turn down the thermostat anywhere from 10 to 15 percent. Then, turn on your electric blanket for eight hours to the desired temperature. You may find you save up to ten percent on your heating bill.

Electric blankets are made by top name companies like Polartec, Beautyrest and Sunbeam to name a few. You can find them at chain discount department stores like Wal-Mart and Target and specialty boutiques like the Vermont Country Store. And of course, they can be purchased online. Most electric blankets sold today have many of the same features. The majority of them have ten heat settings but some have up to 15. They usually will come with a preheat feature and auto shutoff after ten hours of use.

These blankets are available in all sizes from Twin up to King. Queen and King sized blankets usually have dual controls and two distinct heating zones. The fabric of the average warming blanket will be acrylic, polyester, a combination of the two or a cotton polyester or acrylic blend. The texture is usually a soft fleece, and sometimes features satin binding at the top edge. If you want something to keep you warm when sitting in your reclining chair or on the sofa, consider an electric warming lap blanket or throw.

Unlike the heated blanket, the warming throw only comes with three heat settings on average. The shutoff time is shorter, usually set at three hours. Many top companies also make electric heating mattress pads, comforters and foot warmers. More than one warming product should not be used at a time for general safety. Speaking of safety it is crucial to make sure the blanket you purchase is UL listed. The UL tests electrical appliances to make sure they are safe and effective. You will find the UL logo on the product package, tag and if shopping online in the product description.
